Background of the Study:
Alcohol consumption is a major lifestyle factor influencing cardiovascular health, with effects that vary depending on the quantity and frequency of intake. In Plateau State, alcohol consumption patterns are diverse, ranging from moderate drinking—which some studies suggest may have cardioprotective effects—to heavy and binge drinking that significantly increase cardiovascular risk (Emeka, 2023). Chronic and excessive alcohol use is associated with several adverse cardiovascular outcomes, including hypertension, cardiomyopathy, and an increased risk of stroke. The physiological mechanisms involve oxidative stress, inflammation, and direct myocardial toxicity, all of which contribute to the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases (Adebayo, 2024).
The socio-cultural context in Plateau State further complicates the relationship between alcohol consumption and cardiovascular health. Cultural practices and social norms often dictate the frequency and type of alcohol consumed, and these patterns are influenced by factors such as economic status, age, and gender. Recent studies emphasize that while moderate alcohol consumption may be linked to a lower risk of heart disease, heavy and episodic binge drinking has deleterious effects on cardiovascular function (Chinwe, 2025). This duality necessitates a nuanced approach to understanding alcohol’s impact on heart health, particularly in regions like Plateau State where drinking behaviors vary widely.
Given the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases in Plateau State, it is imperative to investigate how alcohol consumption contributes to this trend. This study will explore the patterns of alcohol consumption and their direct correlation with cardiovascular health outcomes among residents of Plateau State. By examining both the beneficial and harmful aspects of alcohol intake, the research aims to provide a balanced perspective that can inform public health interventions. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for developing targeted strategies that minimize alcohol-related cardiovascular risks while promoting overall heart health.
Statement of the Problem :
Despite the acknowledged link between alcohol consumption and cardiovascular diseases, there is limited empirical data on how varying levels of alcohol intake impact cardiovascular health in Plateau State. The region’s diverse cultural practices around drinking have led to inconsistent consumption patterns, making it challenging to determine the direct health implications of alcohol use (Okeke, 2023). Many residents engage in behaviors ranging from moderate, socially acceptable drinking to hazardous binge drinking, yet the specific cardiovascular outcomes associated with these behaviors remain under-investigated.
The absence of localized research on this topic hinders the development of effective public health policies aimed at reducing alcohol-related cardiovascular risks. In particular, heavy alcohol consumption has been linked to elevated blood pressure, arrhythmias, and cardiomyopathy—conditions that can lead to severe cardiovascular events. Moreover, the interaction of alcohol consumption with other lifestyle factors, such as diet and physical inactivity, further complicates the risk profile for heart disease (Uche, 2024). Without detailed, region-specific data, interventions may be misdirected or insufficient to curb the rising incidence of alcohol-related cardiovascular complications.
This study aims to address this gap by systematically evaluating the impact of alcohol consumption on cardiovascular diseases in Plateau State. By assessing consumption patterns and correlating them with specific cardiovascular outcomes, the research seeks to provide actionable insights for healthcare providers and policymakers. The ultimate goal is to develop targeted public health strategies that reduce alcohol-related cardiovascular risks and improve overall heart health in the region (Nnamdi, 2025).
